The longevity of the Puyallup Tribes can be attributed to their resilience in utilizing everything around them for survival. Fresh water flowing from Mt. Rainier brought plentiful salmon and fed the land to become a cultural cornucopia; paired with the resourcefulness of the Puyallup People created an opportunity to tell their story through a memorable momento.

Project Goals

Merge the timeless narrative of the Puyallup Tribe with their modern casino ventures, while aknowledging the reservation, its tribe, culture, and traditions.

Design Research

To capture the look and feel of nature-driven design. Inspiration from the Puyallup People's angler lifestyle and colorful surroundings inspire the final packaged system’s shape, color, and imagery.

Mt. Rainier is the source of all of the abundance that has fuelled the Puyallup Tribe for generations. Its freshwater flows into the Puyallup River that contains schools of sockeye salmon which drove the production of boat and net making and fed the landscape to produce a colorful variety of crops and flowers.

Final Packaged System

The imagery on the playing cards represents the various elements that contribute to the Tribes’ success; woodworking, agriculture, sockeye, and Mt. Rainier.

The playing card holder is a fish tin in tribute to the sockeye that fill the Puyallup River. The inscription inside reads “The Puyallup Tribe of Indians have lived along the shores of the Puyallup River in Washington State for thousands of years. Living off the waters fed by Mount Rainier, the Puyallup People fished, hunted, and traveled by these waters. Sockeye Casino acts as a support to continue the ownership of these lands to the Puyallup People.”
